THCA, or tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, is the precursor to THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the compound responsible for the psychoactive effects of cannabis. When raw cannabis is decarboxylated (heated), THCA is converted into Delta 9 THC, which is why consuming raw cannabis does not produce the same psychoactive effects as consuming dried, heated cannabis.
